Jackson, Wy - portrait of a town

November 18, 2008

There's no doubt that Jackson, Wyoming is a beautiful place. Surrounded by splendid peaks, wildlife, adventure and excitement, Jackson is stunning.

Yet there's more here than meets the eye. On the main street you'll see the faux-western theme with fancy stores and restaurants tempting you to part ways with all the Jackson's you have in your wallet. You'll view stellar art galleries, and a town square arch made of elk antlers, but when you take a stroll down the back streets you'll get a glimpse of what Jackson used to be like before it all started to change.

The Jackson you hear of now has seen a tremendous influx of wealthy people in recent years which has changed the character of the town forever. You could call it gentrification, but I don't believe that's quite the right term. Anyway, it's a tremendous place to visit as there is so much to do in the surrounding areas. Take Yellowstone for one: you could spend a very very long time there and not see everything there is to see.

And so without further fanfare here are a few images of Jackson itself. The real Jackson:

Ski Fence

Yes, someone accented their fence with skis. Ski Fence shows that the spirit of Jackson is still there.

Ski Fence

Here's another look at the fence, this time around the corner from the previous image. A cute bungalow is hidden behind this cute fence.

Sorry, We're closed

Sorry, We're Closed shows that some of the urban decay in old Jackson and that old Jackson itself is dying, being replaced by a shiny new vision of Jackson. One with money.

Private Property

Here we have some Private Property from a Public Street which in all likelihood will be torn down to make way for some sort of fancy vacation home. Sad really - this was someone's home once upon a time.

Cottage in Jackson

Cottage in Jackson shows that all is not lost, that Jackson is still there. It's just that you have to get off the main street to find it. So go there and hit those National Parks and have a great time out in creation.
