Storm over the Teton Range 1 (color)

FLR3009837255 2008

Just cruising looking for wildlife and the sun poked through these clouds on the field in the foreground with such splendour that I ran off the road and jumped out of our huge rented SUV and was able to grab a couple of frames before it disappeared again. Naturally I've padded the two frames out to five with different treatments. And yet I can't decide which I prefer out of all of them...

This is a brilliant set of images mate! Good thing you had your camera to hand as you've captured something stunning here. Really amazing!

First up, if you haven't already done so, try seeing the shots large on black; as it's very difficult to make out dark tones in detail on the stark white of the Flickr layout. You can do that with BigHugeLabs or using Darckr, BigHugeLabs links for yours are:

Teton2 BW
Teton2 col
Teton1 BW1
Teton1 BW2
Teton1 col

For Teton1, I prefer the colour version without a doubt; the steely blue gray tones of the sky contrast far more with the golden hues of the grassland than the various shades of grey can express.

For Teton2... It's much more difficult to call. Given I have a strong personal preference for colour, I suspect that means that the B&W version is stronger overall, which probably explains why it's in Explore ;)

My only nit with the colour version of T2 is that diagonal blade of grass or whatever it is in the bottom right of the frame. It's distracting. I think, since it's not a major element I'd just Burn/Clone it out.

Thanks Adrian for your super comments,

I have the same images on my website on a black background and it does help a lot. Thanks for the BigHugeLab links.

I hadn't really noticed that blade of grass in the lower right of Teton 2, and now you've pointed it out it bugs me greatly such that I'll have to get rid of it now!

I'm likewise leaning towards color for the first, b+w for the second.
